Boutique Hotel · Mullumbimby

The luxury case for Blackbird Byron.

Five detached pavilions on a former banana plantation on the slopes of Mount Koonyum, 30 minutes from Byron Bay. Built with reclaimed materials and energy-saving technologies, Blackbird pairs brutalist concrete-and-timber architecture with panoramic views to Cape Byron and the Pacific Ocean. A magnesium pool, infrared sauna, in-pavilion massage, and private chef degustation dining round out an intimate, adults-only escape for a maximum of ten guests.

The mood

Intimate, grounded, and quietly luxurious

Ideal stay

Two to three nights to fully slow down, enjoy a degustation dinner, book a massage, and explore the hinterland

Why it earns the rate

Book the Friday or Saturday degustation dinner by Chef Dai Shibata and pair it with an in-pavilion massage for the full Blackbird experience

Blackbird has just five detached pavilions, each positioned on the hillside to frame the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean. The architecture is distinctive: reclaimed timber joinery from the original banana plantation structures, burnished concrete floors, and Moroccan tiled bathrooms create a raw, tactile aesthetic that feels purposeful rather than rough.

Inside, king-sized beds are dressed in Egyptian cotton linen. Rainwater showerheads, thoughtful local amenities, and a curated selection of guides (star-gazing, birdwatching, local hiking trails) reflect the attention to detail that runs through the property. The open-fronted design means you can lie in bed and watch the sun rise without moving, or step onto your private terrace to take in the full panorama from Cape Byron to Mount Chincogan.

With a maximum of ten guests on the 12-acre property at any time, the sense of space and privacy is genuine.

Breakfast is included daily and served in the Reception Pavilion: griddled sourdough, fresh local produce, chia pots, seasonal fruits, house-blended teas, and coffee. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options are available on request.

The highlight is dinner. On Friday and Saturday evenings, Chef Dai Shibata prepares a seasonal multi-course degustation served on a communal table by the pool. It is intimate, unhurried, and genuinely special. Monday to Thursday, the Blackbird team offers shared grazing platters at 6:30pm for a more relaxed communal meal. All dinners must be booked at least seven days in advance.

For lunch, the property is a short drive from Mullumbimby's excellent cafes and organic markets. A small selection of deli items is also available in the Reception Pavilion.

The magnesium mineral pool is the centrepiece of the property, set among landscaped gardens with views stretching to the coast. The mineral content is known for easing muscle tension and improving sleep. An infrared sauna sits alongside for a more intensive wellness circuit.

In-pavilion massage is available on request, with Swedish, deep tissue, and pregnancy treatments delivered by visiting therapists. Sessions start from $150 for 60 minutes.

Blackbird succeeds because of what it chooses not to do. There is no lobby, no check-in desk, no restaurant menu, and no attempt to be a resort. Instead, it offers five beautifully designed pavilions on a hillside with some of the most striking views in the Byron Bay region, and then gets out of the way.

The architecture alone justifies a visit. The use of reclaimed materials from the original banana plantation gives the property a sense of place that new builds rarely achieve. The Master Builder's Award it received is well deserved.

But the real draw is the scale. With ten guests at most, Blackbird offers a level of privacy and quiet that larger Byron Bay properties cannot match. The degustation dinners feel like a private dinner party. The pool deck is never crowded. The birdsong (the property shares its hillside with rare yellow-tailed black cockatoos) is the loudest thing you will hear.

For couples looking to decompress in the Byron hinterland without driving into the bustle of town, this is one of the most compelling options in the region.
