Boutique Hotel · Thredbo

The luxury case for The Eastern.

An architecturally acclaimed boutique accommodation in Thredbo Village, The Eastern pairs minimalist Japanese-Nordic design with Snowy Mountains wilderness across two intimate properties: the Cedar Cabin and the Oak Apartment.

Why it earns the rate

No other accommodation in the Snowy Mountains approaches this level of architectural and design ambition. It turns a mountain stay into something genuinely memorable.

Thredbo Village has never lacked for accommodation, but it has lacked for accommodation that makes you think about design. The Eastern changes that. Created with a Japanese-Nordic philosophy that prioritises natural materials, craft, and restraint, it offers two intimate properties, the Cedar Cabin and the Oak Apartment, that feel closer to a mountain ryokan than anything else in the Australian alps. The Cedar Cabin, shortlisted in the Australian Interior Design Awards and featured in Vogue Living, is the standout: a 54-square-metre loft with exposed rough-sawn timber, limewashed bathroom walls, vaulted ceilings, and a Japanese-inspired onsen soaking tub.

The design is deliberately minimal. Timber, stone, and limewash do the work. Smart home technology handles lighting and climate. There is no clutter, no excess, and no attempt to distract from the mountain setting outside the windows. The Oak Apartment takes a similar approach among silvergums with views toward Mount Kosciuszko: quieter, more tucked away, with a full kitchen for longer stays.

The location earns its keep year-round. In winter, Thredbo's ski lifts are a five-minute walk, with the longest runs and highest lifted point in Australia. In summer, the Kosciuszko Express chairlift accesses the summit walk to the continent's highest peak, and the Thredbo Valley Track follows the river through eucalyptus forest to Crackenback. Wildflower season from December to February turns the alpine meadows into something extraordinary.

The Eastern is not a hotel in the traditional sense. There is no reception, no room service, no concierge. What it offers instead is a level of architectural ambition and design consideration that simply does not exist elsewhere in the Snowy Mountains. The Cedar Cabin's onsen tub alone sets it apart, but the broader experience, the quiet, the materials, the mountain light filtering through timber, makes a stay here feel genuinely restorative rather than merely comfortable.

For design-conscious travellers who want the mountains without the generic lodge experience, The Eastern is the answer Thredbo has been waiting for.

What to Know

Before you book

Is this a traditional hotel?

No. The Eastern operates as a self-contained boutique accommodation with smart check-in, not a staffed hotel. There is no reception desk or concierge. The luxury is in the design, the materials, and the setting.

Is it suitable for skiing?

Absolutely. The Cedar Cabin and Oak Apartment are both within walking distance of the Thredbo ski lifts, making it a genuine ski-in, village-base option in winter.

When is the best time to visit?

Winter for skiing, summer for alpine walks and wildflowers. Autumn is quieter and beautiful. Spring can be unpredictable but the shoulder-season rates are attractive.
