Capella Lodge sits on the quieter southern end of Lord Howe Island, perched above the tiny secret beach at Lovers Bay with the towering twin peaks of Mounts Gower and Lidgbird filling the view. It is a small place by design: nine suites, a maximum of twenty guests, and a World Heritage island that caps total visitors at 400 at any one time. The result is a level of seclusion that feels less like a luxury hotel and more like having your own private island.
The lodge was the first property Baillie Lodges founders James and Hayley Baillie brought to life in 2003, inspired by childhood holidays on the island. That personal connection still shows. The raw teak, white linen, and floor-to-ceiling glass interiors are designed to disappear into the landscape rather than compete with it. Australian-designed furnishings, lighting, and artworks fill every space, creating a barefoot luxury aesthetic that suits the setting perfectly.
The main lodge houses the restaurant, bar, and Kentia Lounge, a reading room with banquettes and ocean views. Outside, Gowers Terrace wraps around the infinity pool and jacuzzi, and serves as the social heart of the lodge each evening when sunset cocktails and canapes are laid out against the backdrop of the mountains.
The Lagoon Lofts are mezzanine-level suites with elevated views across the lagoon to the twin peaks. Wooden furniture, boat-porthole details on white panelled walls, and outdoor decks with daybeds set the tone. Bathrooms are finished in dark basalt stone with freestanding baths and rain showers.
The Lidgbird Pavilion is the flagship, and it is worth the upgrade. The minimum age here is 12.
Capella Restaurant has been awarded Two MICHELIN Keys, placing it among the world's most exceptional hotel dining experiences. Chef Cooper Dickson creates daily-changing menus that lean heavily on what the island provides: line-caught fish from the morning boats, house-made pasta, farmed meats, and produce from islanders' gardens including rocket flowers, nasturtiums, watercress, and foraged coastal herbs.
Dinner is included in the rate, served between 6:30 and 8 PM. Seating rotates so every guest gets the best window tables during their stay. The Capella Bar opens from noon until midnight, and the included open bar from 6 PM pours boutique wines and premium spirits. But the daily highlight is sunset on Gowers Terrace: canapes, cocktails, and the slow light show on the mountains as the day ends.
Lord Howe Island is one of those rare places where the hotel is really just the base camp. The Mount Gower summit walk is considered one of Australia's great day hikes, a guided climb through cloud forest to 875 metres with panoramic views of the entire island and the dramatic sea stack of Balls Pyramid offshore.
Closer to sea level, the lagoon offers world-class snorkelling in the world's southernmost coral reef, with sea turtles, over 500 fish species, and pristine coral formations accessible from the shore. At Neds Beach, giant kingfish swim into the shallows to be hand-fed.
