Luxury Hotel · Kangaroo Island
The luxury case for Southern Ocean Lodge.
Perched on a secluded clifftop on Kangaroo Island's south coast, Southern Ocean Lodge is a Baillie Lodges property offering 25 suites with floor-to-ceiling ocean views, all-inclusive dining, guided wildlife experiences, and a spa sanctuary overlooking rolling bushland. Widely considered one of Australia's defining luxury lodges.

It is one of the very few Australian lodges where architecture, landscape, wildlife, food, and service converge at the highest level, and every experience is included in the tariff.
Some properties define a destination. Southern Ocean Lodge, perched on the limestone cliffs of Kangaroo Island's south coast, is one of them. Designed by island-born architect Max Pritchard and envisioned by Baillie Lodges founders James and Hayley Baillie, the lodge opened in 2008 to instant global acclaim, was tragically lost to bushfire in 2020, and reopened with a new design that honours the original while raising the bar. Its 25 suites curve along the clifftop in organic lines that appear to float above the coast, with floor-to-ceiling glass framing the Southern Ocean from every room. It remains one of the clearest expressions of experiential luxury in Australia: a place where what you see and do matters as much as where you sleep.
Twenty-five suites follow the curve of the limestone cliffs, each oriented toward the ocean. The Flinders Suite is the entry point, and it already includes a sunken lounge, limestone floors, blackwood feature walls, custom furnishings, commissioned South Australian artworks, and a complimentary in-suite bar replenished daily. The Remarkable Suite adds a limestone fireplace and private plunge pool. The Osprey Suite occupies the premium position with the most dramatic panoramic views. For families or groups, the Baillie Pavilions offer dual bedroom wings, private lounges, and horizon-edge pools set apart from the main lodge. Every suite shares the same DNA: organic materials, dramatic glass, and an unbroken connection to the landscape.

All dining is included, and the kitchen makes that inclusion count. Breakfast is a relaxed two-step affair: help-yourself artisan cereals, pastries, and fruit alongside a hot a la carte menu. Lunch is lighter, designed as an elegant sufficiency, served alfresco on the terrace when the weather cooperates. Dinner is a daily-changing four-course menu driven by Kangaroo Island and South Australian produce: think island marron, line-caught whiting, and desserts like white chocolate panna cotta with lemon myrtle macadamia crust. The open bar in the Great Room stocks premium wines, craft beers, top-shelf spirits, and Baillies 9 wild gin, while the walk-in cellar offers hand-selected South Australian bottles, many only available at cellar doors. At sunset, guests gather for drinks and share the day's discoveries.
Southern Ocean Lodge is one of very few Australian properties where architecture, landscape, wildlife, food, and service all operate at the same level, and where the tariff genuinely includes nearly everything. A stay here means walking among sea lions at Seal Bay, standing beneath the Remarkable Rocks, spotting koalas at dusk, and returning to a four-course dinner and a walk-in cellar, all without reaching for a wallet. The Southern Spa, reached via a glass-walled aerobridge and set low among coastal heath, adds hot and cold plunge pools and treatments using Kangaroo Island botanicals. For a complete immersion in one of Australia's most extraordinary landscapes, there is nothing quite like it.
