Why it earns the rate

The Florance is not a splurge in the traditional sense, but it delivers a quality of personal hospitality and heritage character that far exceeds its price point.

Not every great place to stay needs a lobby, a concierge, or a room count in triple figures. The Florance proves the point beautifully. Housed in an 1897 residence on George Street, directly opposite Launceston's City Park, this boutique guesthouse offers something that most hotels cannot: the feeling of being welcomed into a home that has been cared for across three centuries.

The building's story stretches back to when the land belonged to John Pascoe Fawkner, one of Melbourne's founders, who used it as a garden and nursery. The house itself was built in 1897 by Edwin H. Reading, and it has passed through several hands before finding its current life as a thoughtfully restored guesthouse. Original features sit alongside modern comforts without any sense of conflict, and the care taken with every detail, from the choice of luxury pillows to the locally made eco-cleaning products, speaks to owners who are genuinely invested in the experience.

The suites each have their own character. The Park View King Suite is the standout, with superb views over City Park, afternoon sun filling the room through heritage windows, and a supreme king bed. The Premium Queen Suites feature distinctive persimmon bedheads that glow in the western light. The Easy Access Suite, reached via ramp from the carpark, offers an extra-large wheelchair-friendly bathroom and a choice of king or twin bedding. Every room includes complimentary Wi-Fi, a smart TV, quality tea and coffee, and a bar fridge.

Breakfast is served in The Conservatory, a glass-walled room that fills with morning light and feels more greenhouse than dining room. The offering is simple and well executed: quality cereal, fresh fruit, yoghurt, juice, and classic boiled eggs with toast to order. For anything more ambitious, the staff will happily point you toward Sweet Brew on George Street or Bread and Butter on Cimitiere Street, both within easy walking distance.

The location is The Florance's quiet superpower. City Park is across the road, Design Tasmania is 50 metres away, the Harvest Market runs each Saturday a 400-metre walk from the front door, and Cataract Gorge, one of Australia's most dramatic natural formations, is reachable on foot. Launceston's best restaurants, including Stillwater and Black Cow Bistro, are all within walking distance, making this an ideal base for exploring the city and the wider Tamar Valley wine region beyond.
