The luxury case for Alkina Lodge.
Three architect-designed private lodges by Glenn Murcutt and Wendy Lewin, set on a secluded property near the Twelve Apostles where kangaroos graze at your doorstep and signature sky windows frame the stars overhead.
Architectural stillness surrounded by native bush and wildlife
2 to 3 nights
You are staying inside a building designed by a Pritzker Prize laureate, surrounded by kangaroos and stars, twenty minutes from one of Australia's most iconic coastlines. Very few places in the world offer this combination.
Some hotels are defined by their service, others by their location. Alkina Lodge is defined by its architecture. Designed by Glenn Murcutt, one of only two Australians to win the Pritzker Prize (architecture's equivalent of the Nobel), and his partner Wendy Lewin, these three private lodges sit quietly on a rural property in the Otways hinterland, twenty minutes from the Twelve Apostles. The design philosophy of 'touching the earth lightly' is visible in every detail: passive solar orientation, natural ventilation, local materials, and the signature sky windows that fill interiors with light by day and frame constellations by night.
There are three lodges on the property. Mira and Yani are four-bedroom residences sleeping up to eight, while Nuru is a one-bedroom lodge designed for couples. All three share the same architectural DNA: clean lines, stone floors, minimalist interiors, and that extraordinary sense of light and space that Murcutt's buildings are known for. The kitchens are equipped with Gaggenau appliances, the living areas furnished with fine European pieces and original Australian art, and the bespoke wood fireplaces are ready to light on cool evenings. Bose audio runs through each lodge. No two lodges feel identical, and the interiors reward slow observation.

Alkina Lodge is self-catering, but this is not a compromise. The Gaggenau kitchens are a genuine pleasure to cook in, and a complimentary gourmet continental breakfast is provided with every stay. For those who prefer not to cook, a personal chef can be arranged to prepare a meal in your lodge. The nearest town with shops is Colac (forty minutes), so stock up before arrival. Many guests find that cooking in these kitchens, with kangaroos visible through the window and a glass of local wine on the counter, is one of the highlights of their stay.
Alkina Lodge occupies a unique position in Australian accommodation. It is not a hotel, not a farmstay, and not a holiday rental in the usual sense. It is a chance to live, briefly, inside a building by one of the world's great architects, in a landscape that feels both wild and serene. The kangaroos that gather on the lawns at dawn and dusk are not a curated experience but a simple fact of the location. The sky windows that turn your living room into a private observatory are not a gimmick but a considered architectural response to the site. For anyone who cares about design, nature, or simply wants a level of privacy and quality that conventional hotels struggle to deliver, Alkina Lodge is a compelling choice on the Great Ocean Road.
