Boutique Hotel · Port Fairy
The luxury case for Drift House.
A six-suite, Michelin Key boutique hotel in Port Fairy where award-winning architecture, modern Australian dining inspired by Spain, and warm owner-operator hospitality set a new benchmark for luxury accommodation in regional Victoria.
Architectural intimacy with coastal calm
2 to 3 nights
It delivers a Michelin Key experience in just six suites, where exceptional architecture, superb food, and genuine owner-operator care combine in a way that large hotels simply cannot replicate.
Some hotels announce themselves. Drift House does the opposite. Tucked onto a corner of Gipps Street in Port Fairy, a small coastal town at the very end of the Great Ocean Road, it is a six-suite property that has quietly accumulated an extraordinary collection of accolades: a Michelin Key, the Australian Tourism Award for Best Luxury Accommodation, a Victorian Architecture Award commendation, and a loyal following of guests who return year after year. Owners John Watkinson and Colleen Guiney, sea-changers who traded corporate life for the south-west Victorian coast, run the place with a small team and a philosophy that luxury should feel personal rather than performative.
The six suites are spread across a cluster of buildings: the original double-storey Victorian bluestone house, a single-storey Edwardian villa, and modern additions clad in perforated metal with walls crafted from local stone. No two rooms are alike, and this is not a marketing line. Suite One occupies the entire ground floor of the bluestone building with a deep solid stone bath, black lantern tiles, and a wide veranda. Suite Two takes the first floor with a separate lounge, commissioned artwork wrapping the bathroom pod, and a balcony over the Moyne River. Suite Three is the largest, modern and light-filled with natural recycled materials. The remaining suites each have their own character, from the architect's free-rein experiment of Suite Four to the calm, muted retreat of Suite Six. Every suite includes bespoke design, innovative use of materials, relaxing seating areas, and the Drift House Maxi-bar. Free WiFi throughout.

Food is central to the Drift House experience. The Salon, a purpose-built garden pavilion that doubles as the hotel's clubroom, hosts dinner on select evenings with a modern Australian menu inspired by the rustic dishes of Spain. Evenings begin in the lounge from 6pm with curated aperitifs, cocktails, local wines, and pre-dinner snacks before moving to the table. The wine list reads like a cellar-door tour across western Victoria, with many drops available by the glass. Breakfast is included and goes well beyond the typical hotel offering: an al la carte menu built around ultra-local produce from small artisan producers, backed by Market Lane coffee and Love Tea. Table availability for dinner is limited and bookings are essential.
Drift House exists in a category of its own. It is not a resort, not a traditional boutique hotel, and not a bed and breakfast, though it borrows the best qualities of each. The architecture alone justifies a visit: Multiplicity's design challenges the hotel cookie-cutter approach and creates genuine moments of discovery around every corner. But what elevates it is the combination of that architecture with genuinely outstanding food, an adults-only intimacy that larger properties cannot achieve, and the kind of owner-operator warmth that makes you feel like a guest rather than a booking. Port Fairy itself, a UNESCO-recognised community at the mouth of the Moyne River, provides the perfect setting: great surfing, cycling, world heritage indigenous history at Budj Bim, and the dramatic landscapes of the Great Ocean Road and Grampians within easy reach.
